Norton Finance Committee Rejects $350,000 Tax Refund
Finance Committee · Meeting of September 28, 2026
Norton Finance Committee votes 6-3 to reject a $350,000 tax rebate, calling it a "political stunt." Board of Assessors Chair Rick had proposed returning overlay surplus to cut the average tax bill by about $52, but member Zach argued the money should instead replenish stabilization funds the town drew down last spring, saying "this is nothing more than a political stunt." Member Brandon countered that "the residents should get it back." Separately, the committee voted 8-1 to move the town's full certified free cash balance, estimated near $4 million, into stabilization for higher interest, over the chair's objection to voting on an uncertified "fuzzy number." Members also approved roughly $1.8 million in capital transfers for fire, police, school and sewer projects, recommended industrial zoning height increases from three to five stories, and endorsed four union contracts totaling about $71,571 in new costs.
