School Committee Advances Police Contact Policy
School Committee · Meeting of September 9, 2026
Norton School Committee gives first read to state-mandated police-contact policy, approves superintendent's goals. Only three of the panel's members attended the September 9 meeting, tabling a vote on prior minutes but unanimously approving Superintendent Dr. O'Neill's four 2026-2027 goals, including a push to finalize new school start times and busing by December.
O'Neill said the police policy stems from a law she called the "Protect Act," signed by Gov. Maura Healey on August 5 with a September 1 compliance deadline the district missed; a second reading is set for October. "Those SROs are still bound by police powers," O'Neill told members.
The committee also reviewed warrants of $286,449.44 in school expenses and $209,338.37 in payroll, and recognized 68 Norton High School AP Scholar honorees, including 13 seniors honored in person.
