NORTON --

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Nichols Middle School girls soccer is off to a 3-2 start with a roster made up of nine sixth graders, nine seventh graders and three eighth graders; only three players returned from last year's team. The Lancers have notched wins over Middleborough, Bridgewater and Westport, according to a coach's update shared at the Oct. 7 School Committee meeting.

Boys soccer stands at 3-3 after dropping its first three games. The 21-player roster, which includes nine eighth graders, nine seventh graders and three sixth graders, has since strung together three straight wins over Middleborough, Case and Raynham, outscoring opponents 9-2 over that stretch. Highlights included a 25-yard free-kick goal by Timmy Malouf against Westport, two goals in under a minute from Carter Theos versus Case, and a diving penalty-kick save by J.J. Borba who, after being moved to forward, scored a goal five minutes later.

Volleyball is 3-2 under Coach Harknick, led by captains Willa Britten, Nora Crossman and Cora Caraccio. School officials said the program regularly draws about 40 kids to tryouts. Matches are now being filmed and shown on school monitors during lunch, with student Aiden providing play-by-play and intermission segments alongside teacher Mr. Haig.

The Unified Bocce team played its season opener on the school lawn against Seekonk and won, keeping both teams undefeated. The team has three more games on the road in October.

Cross country continues to improve at the midpoint of its season, with the girls team at 3-2 and the boys team at 4-1. Athletes are coached by Dr. J at the high school level and Coach Massaro at the middle school, and have been praised by other schools for their sportsmanship.
